2. Renal Embryology Flashcards
What is the urogential ridge made from?
What does it form?
Intermediate mesoderm
Gonadal ridge and the nephrogenic cord (nephron and ducts)
What is the first functional kidney?
The mesonephros kidney (kidney 2)
Metanephros
final kidney! Comes about in 5th week
When do nephrons form?
In the mesonephros kidney - has mesonephric excretion
What does the ureteric bud form?
Ureter, pelvis, major calyces, minor calyces, collecting tubules
What does the metanephric blastema form?
Renal vesicles, bowman’s capsule, proximal and distal convolutes tubules, loop of henle
Components of the nephron
What creates the renal pelvis?
when the ureteric bud contacts the metanephric blastema
What forms major calyces? Minor calyces?
When the ureteric bud bifurcates and coalesces, the first time it does that will form major calyces
When the bud branches again, those branches coalesce to form the minor calyces
How does the nephron originate?
As a vesicle within the blastemic cap around the ampulla of the collecting duct
Will elongate forming a tube, while glomerulus forms at one end. tubule at that end will invaginate to make bowman’s capsule
Other end will lengthen and form PCT, loop of henle, and DCT
Renal Agenesis
Unilateral renal agenesis will cause no symptoms
bilateral renal angesis is associated w/ oligohydraminos (so typically underdeveloped lungs)
Can survive if put on dialysis and given transplants
Duplex kidney
normally functions
results from an abnormal division of ureteric bud – usually the metanephrous doesn’t form, maybe due to ureteric bud
When are kidney’s in the adult position?
In the 9th week
Pelvic kidney
Kidney didn’t ascend, likely due to vessels preventing motion
Horseshoe kidney
Inferior mesenteric artery will strop the kidney at L3, doesn’t cause problems
Accessory renal vessels
Can compress the ureter, causing problems
will also be an end vessel, so if obstructed that portion of the kidney will become necrotic
