what is a cataract?
thickening of lens
what is myotonic dystrophy?
genetic condition making muscle weakness so presents with loss of facial expression etc
in eyes = get ptosis (droopy eyelid), and potential squint from some muscle relaxation
what eye stuff is seen in neurofibromatosis?
- lisch nodules = yellow/brown specs on iris (makes no issues)
- optic glioma = tumour compressing optic nerve
what eye thing is seen in marfans?
dislocated lens = ectopia lentis (usually superotemporal)
what is eye thing seen in dermatomyositis?
swelling of eyelids & periorbital skin (like from rashes)
what is peripheral ulcerative keratitis?
red eye with not intact epithelium = can be ulcer from trauma or autoimmune
what can happen to eye in rheumatoid arthritis?
- scleromalacia perforans (thinning of sclera)
- scleritis (inflammation of sclera)
what are the different types uveitis? e.g. anterior, posterior etc (what is inflamed in each type?
uvea = iris, ciliary body, choroid (middle layer of eye)
anterior uveitis = inflammation iris
intermediate uveitis = inflammation ciliary body
posterior uveitis = inflammation choroid
pan uveitis = all uvea inflamed
what conditions is posterior synechiae seen in?
HLA B27 (ankylosing spondylitis)
posterior synechiae = type of posterior uveitis where iris stick to lens
what systemic diseases get granulomatous anterior uveitis?
- sarcoidosis, TB, syphilis
what eye issue does amiodarone cause?
vortex keratopathy (swirl in pupil) = no problem
what eye issue does hydroxychloroquine cause?
bulls eye maculopathy (reduced vision)
what eye issue comes with stevens johnson syndrome?
big drug reaction (often sulfa drugs) where eyelids fuse to eyeball
what impact do steroids have on eyes?
they cause high pressure & cataracts
