2. Cells and Tissues of the Immune System Flashcards
Which cells are responsible for antibody production?
Plasma Cells (B cells)
Which cells can help or suppress immune responses?
T lymphocytes
Which cells are involved in antigen presentation to T cells?
Macrophages and Dendritic cells
Which cells are able to phagocytize foreign material?
Neutrophils and Eosinophils
Which cells have a role in allergic reactions?
Eosinophils (regulate) and Basophils
From what organs do the T and B lymphocytes originate?
T lymphocytes = differentiate in the Thymus
B lymphocytes = differentiate in the Bone Marrow (or Bursa of Fabricius)
What is the role of the lymph nodes in the immune response?
- collects AG from intracellular tissue fluids turning primary follicles into secondary follicle with germinal center.
- contains about 75% T cells and 15% B cells
What is the role of the spleen in the immune response?
- filters bloodborne antigens
- contains about 40% T cells and 50% B cells
Where are the T lymphocytes located in the thymus?
- in the lymph nodes?
- in the spleen?
Thymus:
Cortex = receives immature T cells
Medulla = receives cell from cortex become mature T cells
Lymph Node = Paracortex
Spleen = PALS (perilaterial lymphatic sheath)
Where are the B lymphocytes located in the lymph nodes?
- in the spleen?
Lymph Node = Cortex
Spleen = Follicle
T lymphocytes constitute approximately what percent of mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood?
75%
B lymphocytes constitute approximately what percent of mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood?
15%
What cells are the CD2 and CD3 surface markers found on?
T cells
What cells are the CD19 and CD20 surface markers found on?
B cells
