1st QTR, LESSON 1: Plate Tectonics Flashcards
What does the Greek word “Tekton” mean?
Builder
This is also referred as Lithospheric plates.
Plate Tectonics
What are Tectonic Plates?
These are massive irregular slabs of solid rock that covers the Earth’s surface that are interconnected with one another and aren’t seen by the naked eye.
This is the thinnest part and the solid outer part of the earth.
Lithosphere
Why is it hard to explore the rest of the Lithosphere?
It is hard to explore because as we go deeper, the pressure and temperature increases.
What is the Theory of Tectonic Plates?
Tectonic plates are constantly in motion.
This is made out of silicon and protects the Lithosphere from the heat that comes from the mantle.
Asthenosphere
What is the movement of the Tectonic Plates?
Millimetres per year
What are the Major Tectonic Plates?
Pacific Plate
Indo-Australian Plate
North American Plate
South American Plate
African Plate
Antarctic Plate
Eurasian Plate
What are the Minor Tectonic Plates?
Philippine Sea Plate
Nazca Plate
Scotia Plate
Juan De Fuca Plate
Caribbean Plate
Arabian Plate
Cocos Plate
Indian Plate
Earth’s crust and the uppermost layer of the mantle are composed of what?
Rigid units called plates
