19.3. Competition Flashcards
How does competition come about
When two or more individuals share any resource that is insufficient to fully satisfy their requirements.
Types of competition
- Intraspecific
2. Interspecific
What is intraspecific competition
Intraspecific competition occurs when individuals of the SAME species compete with one another for resources
What is interspecific competition
Interspecific competition occurs when individuals of DIFFERENT species compete with eachother for resources
What occurs during interspecific competition
There is usually one with a competitive edge over the other.
The one without the competitive edge dies out, the one with survives
No two species can occupy the same niche when there is competitivity for resources
Significance of resources in regards to the size of a population
Greater availibility = larger population
Lesser availability = smaller population
