10.2: Diversity within a Community Flashcards
What is biodiversity
Biodiversity describes the variety in the living world
It refers to the number and variety of living organism in a particular area
What is species diversity
The number of different species and the number of individuals of each species within any one community
What is genetic diversity
The variety of genes possessed by the individuals that make up a population of a species
What is ecosystem diversity
The range of different habitats, from a small local habitat to the whole of the earth
What is species richness
The number of different species in a particular area at a given time
It is a measure of species diversity
What doesn’t species richness include
It doesnt state the numbers of individuals of each species
Two communities may have the same number of species, but a different abundance of these species.
e.g. wheat field vs meadow, wheat field = 95% wheat, meadow = 1% wheat, but both have 25 species.
What is the diversity index
D= N(N-1) / (sum of) n(n-1)
N = Total number of organisms of all species n = Total number of organisms of each species (SUM OF)
Add total number, multiply that by the same number -1
Divide that by n(n-1) for each species, then sum that together
