describe the boston police strike
- the police officers hadn’t had a raise since before WW1 and can’t unionize. (cost of living went up during and after war, yet wages stayed the same)
- those who asked for a raise had been fired
- Massachusetts Gov. Calvin Coolidge called in the National Guard
- workers who striked were not allowed back to work
- Coolidge “saved Boston”

- workers wanted shorter hours and a livable wage and the right to unionize
- 300,000 walked off of the job
- company hired strikebreakers to work while ppl were striking
- company also used force by having the strikers beat by police, federal troops, and state militias
- in end strikers got a 8hr work day but union

- protested for low wages and long workdays - Palmer obtained a court order sending miners back to work, but workers defied the court order. in the end, workers received a 27% wage increase

- est. max the # of ppl who could enter US from foreign country
- act was in response to exponential immigrant growth in US (1919-1924 the number of immigrants grew 600%)
