190303H A & B Flashcards
Track tension and recoil mechanisms must be inspected, maintained and serviced only after _______________
you have read the service information relating to these systems.
What does track tension that is too tight cause?
accelerated wear of the moving undercarriage components.
You are inspecting an undercarriage system while the machine is in the field. List some of the conditions/problems that might hamper your inspection.
- Poor weather Conditions
- Inadequate equipment Shelter
- Location of the operation site (drive-in vs fly-in)
- Your level of expertise
Explain how pin and bushing wear is measured.
A tape measure is used to measure the distance between the centre of one track pin to the centre of another track pin, perhaps four or five links apart. The track is stretched tight at this time. The measurement is compared to specifications.
Multi-purpose wear gauges are suitable for measuring:
- grouser height and profile.
- track link height.
- idler and roller wear and profile.
- sprocket tooth wear and profile.
What would the wear on the flanges of the roller look like if a machine is constantly working on a hillside and moving in one direction only?
The roller flange wear would tend to be more pronounced on one flange. If the machine turned direction regularly the flange wear might more even on both flanges.
When you work on an undercarriage system you often need:
- a co-worker.
- a service manual.
- hydraulic jack(s), hoist(s) and/or lift truck(s).
- sturdy support stands.
_______________ are used to raise the machine when the machine is immobile.
Lifting wedges
Explain the most important safety precaution you must take if you have to raise a machine to access undercarriage components
Use support stands to hold the weight of the machine and all attachments, including the under carriages
Explain what steps you would take before you installed new or exchange components on a machine
a) Remove the old component and clean the mounting surface.
b) Inspect the mounting surface and bolt holes for signs of cracks or other damage. c) Clean all protective paint and other material off the mounting surface of the new component.
d) Inspect the new component mounting surfaces. Check for flatness and
cleanliness.
e) Check the mating surfaces of both parts to determine if a specific mounting direction is required.
f) Test fit the components together and make sure full contact is possible before installing the mounting fasteners.
What would you use when very high torque specifications are indicated?
You would likely use a torque wrench and a torque multiplier to tighten cap screws that require very high torque settings.
How many times can pins and bushings be turned?
Pins and bushings can only be turned once.
Many undercarriage components can be remanufactured. What determines if a particular component can be rebuilt or not?
Components can be remanufactured as long as they are removed for rebuild while they are still within the service limits specified in the service manual for that machine.
What is the function of an undercarriage system?
- provides traction for the machine on a variety of operating surfaces
- ensures the machine has adequate load carrying capacity (floatation)
- provides machine stability (low centre of gravity, short turning radius) when operating around off-road job sites.
An undercarriage system must provide a balance between which three factors?
- adequate traction
- machine stability
- satisfactory load carrying capacity
