Extraction systems
If a workshop produces dust or fumes, extraction must be provided. Extraction protects users from inhaling any potential airborne particles and must be regularly maintained by an external company on a yearly schedule.
Provison of peronal protective equipment
PPE (personal protection equipment) must be provided to any employee who may be subject to a health and safety risk. Examples are goggles, helmets and masks.
Accident reporting
Accidents or near misses induced by working must be reported via RIDDOR (reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations).
Health and Safety at Work act 1974
All employers must in ensure that all employees and visitors to the workplace are protected in teams of health safety and welfare. (so far as is reasonably practicable)
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations
Employers need to prevent, reduce or control their worker’s exposure to substances that may be hazardous or cause ill health. These include paints, varnishes, cleaning agents, fumes and airborne particles.
Five key steps for carrying out a risk assessment
Identify the hazard
Identify who might be harmed and how
Evaluate the risk and decide on the control measures
Record findings and implement actions
Review the risk assessment after a set period of time

Consumer Protection Act 1987
Liability of the safety of the consumer when using the product lies with the manufacturer.
Trade Description Act 1968
Makes it an offence for a trader to make or apply misleading statements about goods or services.
Features of a safe 3-pin plug
If it is approved by the BSI
It is supplied with a removable card label
The plug has a fuse
The earth pin is the longest pin
The wiring is coloured correctly (earth is green and yellow, neutral is blue and live brown)
