19 - Equilibrium Constant Kp Flashcards
What is partial pressure?
The pressure a gas would exert if it occupied a container on its own.
What is the overall pressure of a system?
All of the partial pressures of each gas in that system contributing to the overall pressure.
What is the formula for partial pressure?
mole fraction of gas x total pressure
What is the formula for the mole fraction of gas?
total number of moles of gas in the mixture
What is the formula for Kp?
partial pressure of reactants
What affect does increasing temperature have on Kp?
Endothermic - equilibrium shifts right, increasing Kp.
Exothermic - equilibrium shifts left, decreasing Kp.
What affect does increasing pressure have on Kp?
No effect, as although equilibrium will shift to the side with fewer molecules the partial pressure ratio of reactant to products stays the same.
