What is CAD?
Computer Aided Design, 2D/3D computer software used to digitally create designs.
What is solid modelling?
3D digital designs that reflect what the final product would look like with information such as dimension, material & weight.
What is virtual imaging?
Displaying the 3D design in a realistic fashion. Mainly used by engineers or architects.
What is rapid prototyping?
A rough prototype made to create a physical model. Needs to be designed before hand. It is build using a liquid like material to build it up layer by layer. Pretty much a 3D Printer.
What are the advantages of CAD?
Easy to put in precise measurements.
Objects are resized on screen so no need for scaling
Program has all the needed features such as champher, extrude & cut
Previously drawn parts can be reused saving on time.
Files can e easily sent
Easy to store, organise files and they are light on space.
Negatives of CAD?
Can be difficult to learn
Files can corrupt
Programme can be expensive
Can be hacked
What is CAM?
Computer Aided Manufacture.
Machines that are operated by computers usually based on CADD drawings to create 3D products with the same level of accuracy and consistency.
Advantages of CAM
Good for Mass, Continuous and Batch production.
Fast
Consistent Quality
High Quality/Accuracy
Disadvantages of CAM.
Expensive software.
You need the computer, machine that supports CAM and the software
Bad for one off.
Staff needs training for software and hardware

What is CIM?
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Where computers are used in the entire production line of a product.
When is CIM used and why?
Where the process of building the entire product is too dangerous or complicated for people to do exactly the same each time.
What are the advantages of CIM?
Less manufacturing lead time.
Increased efficiency and accuracy
Transportation time is reduced.
All of the sub computers send feed back to the host computer which is checked by workers to see if everything is working smoothly or not.
