Requirements for electronic prescribing
prescriber must be credentialed
how is a prescriber credentialed for electronic rx?
- password or response to challenge question
- biometric (fingerprint/iris scan)
- hard token (cryptographic module)
The act of applying the 2 credentials ensures the
legal electronic signature on the prescription
The software should not permit the transmission on controlled e-prescription unless
the prescription is properly signed by a credentialed prescriber using the 2-factor system
The software used by the prescriber and the software used by the pharmacy must be audited by a
third party approved by the DEA

eRxs can be transmitted directly to the pharmacy or over an e-prescription network approved by the board, but must ensure appropriate security by the following:
- esignature process
- date/time stamp
- transmitting system identifier
- prescriber internal sender identification
- pharmacy internal receiver identification
