18 - Rates of Reaction Flashcards
What is The Rate of Reaction?
The speed at which reactants are turned into products
How can we control the rates of reactions?
By altering variables
e.g. Concentrations of solutions or the sizes of reactants
Name 4 factors that affect the Rate of Reaction:
- Temperature
- Surface area
- Pressure of gases
- Temperature
Explain why increasing Temperature INCREASES the rate of reaction
- Particles have more Kinetic energy
- Collisions occur more frequently
- Increases successful collisions
- Therefore, rate of reaction will ⬆️
Explain why increasing Concentration INCREASES the rate of reaction
- More reacting particles in the same volume
- Collisions occur more frequently
- Increases successful collisions
- Therefore, rate of reaction will ⬆️
Explain why increasing Surface area INCREASES the rate of reaction
- More surface for the collisions to occur on
- Collisions occur more frequently
- Increases successful collisions
- Therefore, rate of reaction will ⬆️
e.g. Powdered marble are bigger than marble chips
Explain why increasing Pressure of Gases INCREASES the rate of reaction
- Reactant particles are squeezed together
- Collisions occur more frequently
- Increases successful collisions
- Therefore, rate of reaction will ⬆️
What is the Activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy needed for a reaction to occur
What is a Catalyst?
Substances that speed up chemical reactions without permanently being changed themselves
