1.8 Inorganic ions Flashcards
What are inorganic ions?
Ions that do not contain carbon atoms
Where are inorganic ions found?
They are found in the cytoplasm and extracellular fluid, some in high concentrations and others in very low concentrations
Explain the role of hydrogen ions in the body
Hydrogen ions which determine the pH of substances such as blood - the higher the concentration of hydrogen ions the lower the pH
Explain the role of iron ions in the body
Iron ions are a component of haemoglobin which is an oxygen carrying molecule in red blood cells
Explain the role of sodium ions in the body
Sodium ions are involved in co-transport of glucose and amino acids
Explain the role of phosphate ions in the body
Phosphate ions are a component of DNA and ATP
