Well, I‟m going to talk about the news regarding legalizing [‘li:gəlaiz] same-sex marriage in the US in 2015. It dragged an argument among people in our city.
This was huge news for the lesbian and gay community and it was broadcast on all types of media ranging from television to social networks. Personally, I heard the news on the radio when I was driving home one evening.
Basically, the United States‟ Supreme Court [su:’pri:m’kɔ:t] ruled that the refusal to recognize same-sex marriage is unconstitutional [,ʌn,kɔnsti’tju:∫ənl] and that there should be no legal restriction against marrying another person, whatever his or her gender.
I think this was good news for several reasons. Firstly, it is undeniable that the lesbian and gay community has been growing fast in recent years. Despite the discrimination [dis,krimi’nei∫n] from some “straight” people, these minorities still fight for their right to be treated equally. Secondly, it will change the lives of many individuals. I myself have a gay friend and he is just like other guys, the only difference is that he is not attracted to females. He has a great personality. As a result, the news of legalizing same-sex marriage has encouraged people like my friend to be more confident in themselves.
