Plymouth Colony
Plymouth Colony was established in 1620, in Massachusetts by the Pilgrims, also known as the Separatists because of their religious beliefs. They sailed from England to the New World on board the Mayflower. The Mayflower Compact, an agreement signed by all males on the voyage, was a plan of self-government. The Pilgrims agreed to elect their own leaders and make their own laws.
Jamestown
Jamestown was the first permanent English Colony in the Americas, Established in Virginia in 1607, Captain John Smith was the leader.
Indentured Servant
An Indentured servant was a person who agreed to work for another person without pay for a certain length of time. Many early settlers in America came as indentured servants. A wealthy person paid for the indentured servant’s trip and in return the indentured servant worked from two to seven years without pay in order to pay for his/her passage.
Roger Williams
Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island, with its settlement of Providence. He founded his colony on the idea of religious toleration for all, and a separation of church and state.
Anne Hutchinson
Anne Hutchinson was a Puritan woman who disagreed with the leadership of the Massachusetts Colony. She was driven out and eventually helped establish the colony of Rhode Island.
William Penn
William Penn established the English colony of Pennsylvania as a haven for Quakers
and others searching for religious freedom. He founded the settlement of Philadelphia.
