17.6.5 Propeller Engine Running Flashcards
What types of engines use propellers?
Propellers are used on piston engine aircraft and some types of gas turbine engines, namely turbo-props.
What are Static Checks?
Static Checks are certain checks on the propeller and control system that can be carried out without running the engine.
List the Static Checks that can be performed.
Flight Fine Pitch Stop (FFPS), Auto-Coarsening, Manual Feather, Autofeather, Unfeather.
What is required to prevent flooding the engine with oil during Static Checks?
A dry motoring cycle is required to operate the scavenge pumps.
When are Static Checks normally carried out?
Prior to an engine ground run following engine installation, propeller installation, propeller governor installation, propeller control adjustments, or when called for by the servicing schedule.
What is Manifold Air Pressure (M.A.P.)?
M.A.P. is the air pressure in the engine air induction manifold, related to the power developed by piston engines.
How is boost pressure measured in American engines?
Boost pressure is measured in inches of mercury (in. Hg.), where standard atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psi is taken as 29.92 in Hg.
What is the purpose of the reference power check?
To check that the RPM is the same as that published for the reference RPM when the propeller is set to fine pitch and the throttle is advanced until the manifold pressure reads zero boost.
What is the significance of Zero boost?
Zero boost indicates that the manifold pressure is equal to ambient pressure.
What is the procedure for checking the propeller governor’s control?
Advance the throttle forward an inch and then retard it the same amount, checking that the boost pressure increased then decreased while the RPM remained constant.
What is the maximum take-off RPM for the example engine?
The maximum take-off RPM is 3000 RPM.
How is turboprop engine power measured?
Turboprop engine power is measured in shaft horsepower (SHP) determined by the amount of torque produced.
What must be monitored to ensure correct operation of a turboprop engine?
Engine exhaust gas temperature (EGT) and fuel flow (Wf) must be monitored against the referenced torque and RPM.
What is the procedure for checking the Electro-Hydraulic Pitch Stop (EHPS)?
Check that the EHPS light is ON and the FFPS withdrawn light is ON when moving the power lever towards reverse.
What indicates a problem if the engine does not attain reference RPM at zero boost?
Possible issues include incorrect blade angle (Coarse), weak governor speeder spring, or low engine power.
