- Sin is an act against God’s will.
- Sin makes it difficult for people to have a relationship with God as sin separates people fromGod.
What does the Catholic Church teach about Jesus and salvation?
Jesus came to Earth on order restote the relationship with God, through the salvation brought by his death on the cross.
Why is salvation important to Catholics?
- Without salvation, there would be no relationship with God.
- Without salvation, people’s sins would prevent them from entering heaven.
- Salvation from sin is the whole purpose of Jesus coming to Earth and founding Christianity.
What is grace?
The undeserved mercy from God.
What are some of the types of grace?
- Sacramental grace - grace recieved from the sacraments.
- Charisms - special callings
- Graces recieved from special calling such as priests.

- Jesus’ mission was to bring God’s salvation into the world.
*** “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, so whoever believe in him shall not perish, but have eternal life” ** - This salvation gives the grace to live a good Christian life.
What do the Acts of the Apostles teach about slavation?
- St Peter preaches that salvation comes through Jesus alone and this belief is backed up by the letters of St Paul.
What do Evangelical Protestants believe about salvation?
- Anyone who does not confess their faith in Jesus, cannot possibly be saved.
What does the Catholic Church teach about knowing who will bring salvation?
- No one, but God, knows who will and who will not be saved.
What are the implications of salvation and grace for Catholic practice today?
- Recieving the sacraments of baptism and confirmation
- Recieving the sacrament of reconciliation
- Recieving the sacrament of the Eucharist in Mass
- Leading a Christian life.
This means that the Catholic practices of:
- encouraging families to have their children baptised
- encouraging young adults to be confirmed
- providing oppourtunities to recieve the sacrament of reconciliation weekly
- celebrating the Mass regularly and offering the weekly Mass on Sundays
is important because they enable Catholics to maintain the grace and salvation necessary to enter heaven.
How was the Holy Spirit God’s grace?
- At the ascension, the apostles were given their evangelising mission.
- The apostles were empowered by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.
- It is regarded as the beginning of the Christian Church
- The Spirit is wisdom
Why is the Holy Spirit important?
- Jesus told the disciples that the Holy Spirit would come in his place.
- The Spirit had a particular role in salvation.
- “It is your advantage that I go away, for if I do not, the helper will not come to you.” (John)
What does the Holy Spirit do today?
- Makes Jesus bodily present ot Catholics
- Make Jesus known, just as he made God known to the people of Jerusalem
- The Father is transcendent God
- The Son is God beside us
- The Spirit is God in us
Why do people choose to accept salvation?
- The events of the Paschal Mystery brought salvation.
- “For God sent the Son into world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:17
- The concept of free will means that God can only offer salvation; it takes an individual to accept the offer.
- If people accept the offere,t his does not mean that are saving themselves, but they have recognised Jesus’ sacrifice.
- Salvation is an ongoing process, something to be lived out everyday.
What is the significance of salvation and grace?
- In baptism, humans are redeemed from slavery to sin.
- In confirmation, humans recieve a fresh outpouring of God’s grace
- Repentance of sin is forgiven in the sacrament if reconciliation
- In matrimony and holy orders, grace needed in the vocation of marriage and family life or as an ordained minister of the church, is redeemed
- In the sacrament of the sick, grace and strength unite the suffering of an individual.
