1.6 : The Paschal Mystery Flashcards
What happened at the Last Supper?
The night before his crucifixion, Jesus enjoyed a meal with his disciples. He shared bread and wine and said they were his body and his blood, so established the Eucharist.
“Take and eat; this is my body”
“Drink this all of you, for this is my blood poured out for many for the forgivenss of sins”
What happened at the Garden of Gethsemane?
- After supper, Jesus left his disciples to go and pray, and asked God “if you are willing, take this cup, yet not my will but yours will be done.”
- When Jesus returned, the disciples were asleep, and when they awoke, on of them, Judas Iscariot, returned with chief priests to arrest Jesus
What happened at the trials?
- Peter followed the priests and denied he knew Jesus when he was challenged.
- Jesus was taken to Pontius Pilate, who found him innocent, and offered to release either Jesus, or a Jewish freedom fighter Barabbus
- The crowd chose Barabbus and Jesus was condemned to death by crucifixion.
What happened at Jesus’ crucifixion?
The Gospels all agree that:
* Jesus was crucified on the Friday
* Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus to carry the cross
* A robber was crucified either side of him
* Jesus was mocked by bystanders
* Jesus forgave the killers
* Jesus died on the cross with his last words being “Father into your hands I commend your spirit.
Why is the ascension important to Catholics?
- It reminds Catholics that Jesus had served his purpose on Earth to teach and spread the Word of God, and so he went back to His father in heaven, and so his disciples may continue to spread His message.
- It further proved that Jesus was God incarnate, and so He must return to heaven, knowing that salvation had been achieved.
- By his ascension, Jesus Christ preceeds believers into heaven so that believes may live in the hope of one day being with him forever. (POINT DEVELOPED MORE BELOW)
- The ascension prepares the way for humans to follow Jesus to Heaven and for the Holy Spirit to continue the work of salvation within the Church.
- “He was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God” (Mark 16:19)
What happened at Jesus’ resurrection?
- Joseph of Arithmea was given permission to bury Jesus in his tomb
- On the Sunday morning, Jesus’ female followers visited the tomb to anoint the body, and found the tombstone had been rolled away and the tomb was empty.
- They told the disciples and Jesus appeared to two disciples on the Road to Emmaus
- Jesus appeared to the disciples for 40 days.
What happened at Jesus’ ascension?
- Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit.
- He was taken up from them into a cloud
Why is the resurrection important to Catholics?
- It reminds Catholics that Jesus is the Son of God, aswell as showing the power and authority of God, as only God can conquer death.
- It reminds Catholics that Jesus did overcome death, and guarantees eternal life. John’s Gospel teaches that '’whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life”.
- It allows salvation fro**m sin, as it demonstrates that God accepted Jesus’ sacrifice on Jesus’ behalf.
-
“By his resurrection, he opens a new way to life.”
* “The resurrection above all, constitutes confirmation of all of Christ’s works and teachings” (CCC 651)
What is the importance of the Paschal Mystery?
- The Last Supper was the basis of Mass, the most important form of Christian worship
- Christians believe that the Crucifixion brought forgiveness from sin. “Christ game to give his life as a ransom for many” (Matthew)
Why does the Catholic Church teach that the Paschal Mystery guarantees humanity’s salvation from sin?
Because:
* Jesus freely offered himself for salvation
* This offering was symbolised by Jesus braking the bread and saying “This is my body given for you.”
* Christ’s resurrectiom promises resurrection for all who believe.
* By his ascension, Jesus Christ preceeds believers into heaven so that believes may live in the hope of one day being with him forever.
