Why is Apostolic Succession important to Catholcis?

  • it means that the Pope today has the same authority as Christ gave to St Peter
  • It proves that when the pope and the bishops give the teaching of the church, they are speaking as a successor of the Apostles chosen by Jesus

What are the different types of magisterium?

A
  • The ordinary magisterium is when the bishops teac what has always been taught.
  • The conciliar magisterium is when the Pope calls an ecumenical council to decide teachings (e.g Vatican II)
  • The pontifical magisterium is when the Pope uses papal infallibility to declare doctrines (E.g when Pope Pius XII declared the assumption of the Virgin Mary)

WHy is the magisterium important to catholics?

  • For Catholics, there is no higher authority than the magisterium
  • They gives Cathoplics teachings and answers to the issues that didn’t exist at the apostles e.g same-sex partnerships
  • It provides clear guidance on what Catholcis should believe and how they should behave as Catholic’s in today’s world.
