17 JULY : TBI Flashcards
concussion:
blow to the head resulting in loss of consciousness and / or amnesia of events surrounding the injury
grade 1 concussion
mild concussion - when person does not lose consciousness - may seem dazed
grade 2 concussion
person doesn’t lose consciousness but has a period of confusion and does not recall events
grade 3
when person loses consciousness / no memory of event
which level of concussion do you lose consciousness
grade 3
hematoma def;
blood leak collects in confined area of the brain or skull
how many layers do you have in the skull/ brain
four
name the four layers of the brain / skull
subdural
epidural
intracerebral
sbarachnoid
two most common layers of brain/ skull
intracerebral = inside the skull subdural = right under the dural
anoxia/ hypoxia:
cell death resulting from brain cells receiving no oxygen or lack of oxygen
diffuse axonal injury:
occurs from rotational / torsional twisting of the brain
locked-in syndrome:
a person is conscious but can only communicate with eye movements
what would you set up for locked-in sydnrome?
computer technology to communicate
what is a diffuse axonal injury NOT :
LOCALIZED
coup
injury at the site of impact
coup/ contrecoup
impact caused from the opposite side of the brain
can a person can hear you in a veggie/ locked in state?
YES
list like four problems with a TBI:
unilateral neglect
skin breakdown
positioning/ orthotics
communication issues
coma
on arousal / awareness
no interaction with the environment
no sleep wake cycle
vegetative state:
sleep wake cycles yes
no interaction with ext. environment
stage 1 of coma
no response
stage 2 of coma
decorticate rigidity / extensor positioning
stage 3 of coma
pt decerebrate / flexor positioning
stage 4 of coma
massive withdrawal from stimulus and j
non purposeful movement of limbs
