1.7 Cells in there enviroment Flashcards
What does permeable mean?
Permitting passage.
What does impermeable mean?
Not promoting passage.
What is a cell membrane like?
A mesh net.
Which passes through a cell membrane easier, small molecules or large molecules?
Small molecules.
What does it mean when we say a cell membrane is selectively permeable?
It allows certain substance to enter or leave but not others.
What is diffusion?
The movement of molecules from and area of high concentration to and are of lower concentration. (fart in a room)
What is the purpose of diffusion in cells.
It is one of the ways substances move into and out of cells.
Explain why cell membranes are selectively permeable with diff rents size pores.
To allow different size molecules to enter and exit.
Do you think cells could survive without diffusion?
No because large molecules couldn’t enter.
What would happen if cell membranes where permeable instead of selectively permeable.
The wrong types of molecules would enter or to much of a good molecule would enter causing the cell to become sick and or die.
If a glass of lemonade spilled in a swimming pool would you be able to detect the lemonade?
Yes but in very small amounts.
What would happen if poisonous chemicals where dumped into a lake from which a town gets its water suply?
Iy could end up making the entire town sick or ill.
