1.6 Parts of a cell seen with and electron microscope Flashcards
What are Organelles?
A tiny structure with in the cytoplasm of the cell specialized to carry out a function.
What is the main purpose of mitochondria?
They provide the cells with energy in a process called cellular respiration.
What is the shape of mitochondria?
Circular or rod shaped.
How does cellular respiration release energy into a cell?
The mitochondria combined sugar molecules with oxygen molecules.
What are mitochondria often referred to as?
The power plants of cells.
What is the main function of ribosomes?
Protein manufacturing.
How do ribosomes function?
They use information from the nucleus and molecules from the cytoplasm to produce proteins.
Why do cells need proteins?
For cell growth, repair, and reproduction.
What are ribosomes attached to?
The endoplasmic reticulum.
What is the purpose of endoplasmic reticulum?
Materiel transport.
What does it mean if the endoplasmic reticulum is “rough”.
It has ribosomes attached to it.
What does it mean if the endoplasmic reticulum is “smooth”?
It has no ribosomes attached to it.
What is the purpose of the Golgi apparatus?
Protien storage.
What does the Golgi apparatus look like?
A stake of flattened balloons.
What is the purpose of lysosomes?
Recycling and cleaning the cytoplasm.
