Specific types of approach are stabilized if they also fulfil the
following:
ILS approaches must be flown within one dot* of the glide-slope
and localizer a Category II or III approach must be flown within the
expanded localizer band during a circling approach wings should
be level on final when the aircraft reaches 300 feet above airport
elevation
*One dot represents ± 0.8 degrees of deviation on the localizer
scale and ± 0.4 degrees on the glideslope scale
Controller actions that may contribute to unstable approach
- Late or high rate of decent to intercept ILS
- Late change in runway resulting in a tailwind landing
- Inappropriate vectoring not allowing the correct profile to be flown
- Inappropriate use of speed control
- Incorrect distance from touchdown
- Vectoring for short final
- Glide path interception from above
- Delayed descent
INSTRUMENT APPROACH SEGMENTS
1 - ARRIVAL,
to
2 - INITIAL; from initial approach fix (IAF),
to
3 - INTERMEDIATE; intermediate fix (IF),
to
4 - FINAL Final Approach Fix (only on NPA - FAF), Final Approach Point (PA only – FAP),
to
5 - MISSED Missed approach point (MAPt)
Where no suitable IAF or IF is available to
construct a straight in approach:
a REVERSAL procedure;
a RACETRACK procedure;
Or HOLDING pattern is required
ASMGCS
Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System
METHODS OF IDENTIFYING SMR TRAFFIC
• The position of visually observed aircraft or vehicle with that on SMR
• An identified SMR position from another radar source
• An SMR position complying with an atc instruction for a specified manoeuvre
• A displayed SMR position to an aircraft or vehicle as reported by radio
• A displayed SMR position to an aircraft or vehicle position e.g., at the holding point
USES OF SURFACE MOVEMENT RADAR (SMR)
- To monitor the movements of aircraft and vehicles on the manoeuvring area.
- To provide advice and assistance for the safe and efficient movement of aircraft and vehicles on the manoeuvring area.
- Determining that a runway is clear of aircraft and vehicles.
- To ensure departing aircraft lined up on correct runway.
- To monitor traffic in order to facilitate switching of taxi lighting.
- To Monitor and assist emergency services.
- To ascertain aircraft have commenced take-off run
