1.6.3 & 1.6.4: Kc and factors affecting it Flashcards
The equilibrium constant
Kc
A ratio using the concentrations of products and reactants after equilibrium is reached
Kc depends on
specific temperature
Kc units
(cancel out)
moldm3
Factors affecting the equilibrium constant
3
temperature change
concentration change
adding a catalyst
Temperature change effect on Kc
equilibrium shifts to endothermic direction
to absorb heat
eg: if increase in heat = forward reaction = endothermic = more products formed = Kc will rise
vice versa
Concentration change effect on Kc
Kc value fixed a given temp.
so if conc. changes, the others concs. will change too keep the Kc value the same
AKA: change in conc. = Kc stays same
Addition of a catalyst effect on Kc
no effect on position of eqm. or Kc
as will increase rate of both reactions
so eqm. will be reached faster
