1.6- The Nervous System Flashcards
1
Q
What are two main parts to the nervous system?
A
• The central nervous system (CNS) – the brain and
spinal cord.
• The peripheral nervous system – nerves taking
information from sense organs into the CNS, and nerves taking information from the CNS to effectors (muscle
or glands).
2
Q
What are receptor cells?
A
Special cells adapted to detect stimuli.
3
Q
What are effectors?
A
Glands or muscles that carry out a response.
4
Q
How are neurones adapted to their functions?
A
- Long
- Have an insulating sheath to prevent impulses from leaking away
- Branched endings so they can communicate with many other neurones
