1.5- Immunity And Imunisations Flashcards
What are the different sorts of white blood cells?
Phagocytes- engulf the pathogens
Lymphocytes- produce antibodies or antitoxins
Why can each type of antibody can destroy a particular type of bacterium or virus?
Each type of pathogen has particular antigens with a specific shape on its surface - each type of antibody has a particular shape and can lock onto a particular antigen.
Once the pathogen is coated with antibodies, white blood cells can ingest and kill the pathogens.
What does immunisation do?
Can make people immune to a disease without having the disease.
What does MMR stand for?
Measles, mumps and rubella
How does immunisation work?
A small amount of dead/inactivated pathogen is introduced into your body
What barriers does your body have to stop pathogens entering it?
Skin Tears Stomach acid Mucus in the airways Blood clotting when you cut yourself
