BIFURCATION OF THE AORTA
Describe the location of the liver
right side/RUQ, enclosed by diaphragm; extends inferiorly to the costal margin on right and across midline to left MIDCLAVICULAR line
Describe location of gallbladdar
funds at tip of high 9th CC; transpyloric plane
Describe the location of the spleen
left side, posterolaterally; between ribs 9&11, parallel to 10th rib;
Location of left kidney
10th intercostal space
Location of right kidney
11th rib or intercostal space
location of the hilus of the kidneys
L1 / transpyloric plane
Location of the esophageal hiatus of the stomach
T10
Location of the fungus of the stomach
inferior to left leaf of diaphragm
Location of pylorus
Transpyloric plane L1
List the corresponding spinal segments for the 4 parts of the duodenum
L1/transpyloric plane, L2, L3/subcostal plane, L2
right colic flexure
where ascending colon turns to transverse colon; may be palpable if diseased; anterior to the bottom of the liver @ inferior margin of rib cage
Ileocecal junction
in right iliac fossa, this is where the ileum and the cecum meet
left colic flexure
deep to the rib cage, adjacent to spleen and stomach, not palpable, where transverse colon turns down and becomes descending colon
duodeno-jejunal junction
junction between duodenum and jejunum; just left of midline; between transpyloric and subcostal planes (aka at L2)
how do you find the appendix?
appendix is located at McBurney’s point; to find this point, draw a line between anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) and umbilicus. About 1/3 of the distance from ASIS to umbilicus, you will find McBurney’s point
Parietal peritoneum innervation
SA
Visceral peritoneum
VA (v for visceral)
Mesentery
doubling up of visceral peritoneum; tethers an organ to the posterior abdominal wall; will also contain neurovasculature for the organ it tethers
Whats another name for the round ligament of the liver?
obliterated umbilical vein
Whats another name for the medial umbilical folds?
obliterated umbilical artery
What two ligaments compose the lesser omentum?
hepatoduodenal ligament and hepatogastric ligament
What are some names for the opening to get in under the lesser omentum?
omental foramen, epiploic foramen, or foramen of winslow
When you enter the epiploic foramen, what space do you get into?
the lesser sac, also called “omental bursa”
What are the two primary ligaments of the spleen?
Gastrosplenic ligmanet
Splenorenal ligament
What ligaments make up the greater omentum?
Gastrosplenic ligament
Gastrophrenic ligament
Gastrocolic ligament
Splenorenal ligament
What is the clinical importance of the gastrocolic ligament?
can spread cancer or inflammatory processes from the stomach to the transverse colon or vice versa
What structure do the right paracolic gutters cradle
ascending colon
What structure do the left paracolic gutters cradel
descending colon
