1.6 Organ Systems Flashcards
One example of an organ system
The digestive system. Many organs working together to perform the particular function of digestion
Stomach Pancreas Small intestine Large intestine Gall bladder Mouth Gullet Rectum Anus Appendix Bile duct Diaphragm
What glands are contained within the digestive system.
pancreas and salivary glands
These glands make and release digestive juices containing enzymes to break down your food.
What are the main organs responsible for the digestion of food.
Stomach and the small intestine are the main organs where food is digested. Enzymes break down the large insoluble food molecules into smaller, soluble ones.
What is an organ system
Groups of organs that work together to perform a particular function
The digestive system and its functions
The digestive system of humans and other mammals exchanges substances with the environment.
The food taken in and made up of large insoluble molecules. The body cannot absorb and use these molecules. They need to be broken down and digested to for, smaller, soluble molecules.
These can then be absorbed and used by the cells. This process of digestion takes place in the digestive system.
Breaking down large insoluble molecules into small soluble molecules.
What is the digestive system
The digestive system is a muscular tube that squeezes your food through it.
It starts at one end with your mouth and finished at the other with your anus.
The digestive system contains many different organs, there are glands such as pancreas and salivary glands. These glands make and release digestive juices containing enzymes to break down your food.
The stomach and small intestine are the main organs of the digestive system. Enzymes break down this large insoluble molecules into small soluble ones.
The small intestine is where the soluble food molecules are absorbed into your blood.
Once there they get transported in the bloodstream around your body. The small intestine is adapted to have a very large surface area. This increases diffusion from the gut to the blood.
The muscular walls of the gut squeeze the up digested food onwards into the large intestine. This is where the water is absorbed from the undigested food into the blood.
The material left forms faeces. Faeces are stored and then pass out of the body through the rectum and Anus back into the environment.
Plant organs
Plants have differentiated cells that form specialised tissues. These include mesophyll, xylem, phloem. Within the body of the plant tissues such as these are arranged to form organs.
Each organ carries out its own particular function.
Plant organs include leaves, stems and roots, epidermal tissue, xylem, phloem, mesophyll tissue.
