1.6 Development Flashcards
What are Critical Periods?
-Milestone moments of an individuals life starting from birth that deal with behavior and physical development
What is neurulation?
Development of the neural cord
What time does this start?
3-4 weeks into conception
Step 1: Neural Groove
-ectoderm furrows into the notochord
Step 2: Neural folds and Neural Crests
- two areas on the outside of the furrow
- Neural crest: cells that go out to form tissues
step 3: closing of the neural chord
-Formation of the CNS
Step 4: alar and basal plates
- alar: sensory neurons
- basal: motor neurons
Give some examples of the conditions for a baby to develop?
- temperature
- position
- pressure
Placenta?
- Food source for the baby
- oxygen
- nutrients
umbilical cord:
hooks the baby to uterus and the placenta
Where are the nutrients coming from?
- amino acids and proteins
- blood of mother
Why are viruses really harmful to the baby?
- Attack the placenta
- defects in the baby
how do pharmaceutical drugs hurt the baby?
-side effects that can cause physical and mental disabilities in babies
Example: thalidomide
-drug taken for morning sickness and babies were coming out with deformities
Maternal problems: Malnutrition?
- lower immune system
- not having vital nutrients to build up certain things
- intellectual disabilities
Maternal Problem: Narcotics
- physical and mental disabilities
- dependence
- premature babies
- low heart rates
Maternal Problem: Alcohol
Slow development
Maternal problem: x-rays
-rays can cause physical deformities for the baby
Reflex:
-reaction that occurs in the body without thinking or using the CNS
Primitive reflex:
- reflexes that that occur at birth and slowly go away
- supposed to be ancestors
Rooting Reflex:
- touching the cheek of the baby it goes towards it
- smelling of the nipple
moro flex:
-When moving the head the baby raises their hands and then cries
Babinski Reflex:
-Curling toes when touched
Grasping reflex:
holding on to something
Why is it good for the baby to kick and do random movements?
-Shows that they are very well coordinated
How does the environment develop the baby?
-Allows the baby to develop faster
Motor: Gross
-large portion skills
Motor: fine
smaller regions such as the fingers and toes
Social: 7mnths- 1 year
-anxiety from separation with the mother
Social: 2 years
-parallel play with other children without having to control them
Social: 3 years
-gender, first and last name, pretend play
Social: 5 years
- crushes on people
- finding peers
Social: 6-12 years
- same sex friends
- not be in relationships
Social: teenagers
- rebellious
- independence
- relationships
- sexual orientation
Developmental milestones
-basic behaviors and physical attributes of a growing child
