1.2 Organization of Human Nervous System Flashcards
What is the Nervous System Responsible For?
-Connects the external stimuli to your brain and your body
What are the three types of Neurons?
-Sensory Neurons
Interneurons
Motor Neurons
What do sensory neurons(Afferent) do?
-Take the external stimuli and send it to your CNS
What do motor neurons (efferent) do?
-Take the signals from the CNS and send them to the muscles
what do the interneurons do?
-Mostly with Reflex Arcs
What is the Reflex Arc?
A connection of different interneurons
Example: Stepping on a nail
- The Sensory neurons will try to send the information to the CNS
- In the mean time the interneurons get the body to react out of danger
- Signal get sent
What is the CNS?
Central Nervous System:
- Brain
- Spinal Cord
What is the PNS?
Peripheral Nervous System
- all other nerves
- the few cranial and spinal nerves
- Connects the CNS to rest of body
What does the PNS break down into?
Somatic and Autonomic System
What is the Somatic System?
- Voluntary control system over muscles
example: Moving your hand
What is the Autonomic System?
- Involuntary control
- example: heart beating, breathing
What does the Autonomic break down into?
- Sympathetic
- Parasympathetic
What is the sympathetic system?
Have sympathy for me my house is on fire (stress)
- Raises the heart rate
- heavy breathing
- no digestion
- no bladder movement
- orgasms
- releases epinephrin
What is the parasympathetic system?
The paramedics (neutral)
- Slow breathing
- slower heart rate
- digestion
- bladder control
