15.9 molecular structure and the strength of acids Flashcards
1
Q
List four factors that affect the strength of an acid
A
The strength of an acid is determined by its tendency to ionize in a solution and to give a proton.
- molecular structure of the acid
- Properties of the solvent
- Strength of H-A bond, the stronger the bond the more difficult it is to release H+
- Polarity of H-A bond, a high degree of polarity means it is a stronger acid
