15.4 Strength Of Acids And Bases Flashcards

1
Q

Explain what is meant by the strength of an acid

A

Strength of an acid can be determined by their ionization in water

An acid, which is completely ionized I’m water, is a strong acid. At equilibrium, a solution of a strong acid will not contain any non-ionized molecules whereas a weak acid ionizes to a limited extent in water

At equilibrium, the solution of a weak acid will contain non-ionized acid molecules and conjugate bases
