15.1 Bronsted Avids And Bases Flashcards
1
Q
Define Bronsted acids and bases
A
Bromsted acid is a substance capable of donation a proton
Bromsted bass is a substance that can accept a proton
2
Q
In order for a species to act as a Bromsted base, an atom in the species must posses a lone pair of electrons. Explain why this is so
A
In order for a species to act as a Bromsted base, it must posses a lone pair of electrons. This is because a Bromsted base has to gain protons from Bromsted acids which contain H+ ions and H+ ions are electron deficient. Hence, for a species to act as a Bromsted base, an atom in the species must posses a lone pair of electrons
