15.7 - Exhuast Flashcards
What is the purpose of swirl vanes in a turbo-prop exhaust?
They create a suction effect, drawing air past the oil cooler. If swirl vanes are damaged or missing, they can cause excessive oil temperature on the ground
What shape is a subsonic exhaust nozzle?
Convergent
What is the maximum velocity across a convergent nozzle?
Mach 1.0
What are the two types of high bypass exhaust systems?
Internally mixed
Externally mixed
Where may you find a diverging exhaust nozzle?
Helicopter tailpipe to nullify thrust and improve hover capabilities
What is the purpose of the exhaust on the jet engine?
To convert gas potential energy into kinetic energy
In terms of pressure and velocity, what would you find at the exhaust nozzle exit?
High velocity, lower pressure
What is a choked nozzle?
Where the airflow velocity is at the speed of sound, at the smallest area of the nozzle
What engines extract the maximum amount of gas energy to be used by the turbine?
APUs and turbo shaft engines
In terms of pressure ratio, why are convergent/divergent nozzles used?
For higher pressure ratios than 2:1
Where will you find a CD nozzle?
On a supersonic jet
What is the most efficient nozzle shape for supersonic aircraft?
Iris nozzle
What are the three common types of thrust reverser?
Clam shell
Bucket door
Fan air reverser (blocker doors)
What are the two modes that a thrust reverser will operate in?
FADEC mode
Manual mode
What ATA chapter would you find reverse thrust in?
Chapter 78
