Q

What are the disadvantages of a radial turbine?

A

Only allows small air flows or low axial air velocity
Less efficient due to high aerodynamic losses

6
Q

What are the advantages of an axial flow turbine?

A

Can be many stages, allowing drive of accessories and large fan.
Allows very high airflow (needed to create high thrust in modern engines)

7
Q

How can the power output of an axial turbine be increased?

A

Increasing its diameter - however this increases drag since the engine is bigger and also greater stresses imposed due to higher centrifugal forces created.

Therefore, multiple stages are used with a smaller turbine diameter.

11
Q

What is an impulse type turbine blade?

A

They make their rotation only by the impact of gas flow. (Like a water wheel).
Rarely seen, used on older jet engines but may be found in air starters.
F=ma relationship

12
Q

What is a reaction type turbine blade?

A

They rotate due to the lift they create as the gas stream flows over them.

16
Q

What is the advantage of using an impulse/reaction turbine blade?

A

The gas flow enters the exhaust system with a uniform axial velocity.

17
Q

What is the most common turbine blade fixing?

A

The fir tree fixing

18
Q

How are the turbine blades retained in their grooves?

A

Rivets, lock tabs, lock wires and roll pins

19
Q

Blades that have a normal metal crystallised form are called…?

A

Equiaxed crystal mixture

20
Q

What is the problem with equiaxed crystal blades?

A

The boundaries of the grain or crystal in the material is usually the starting point of any failure. It requires the blades to be internally cooled

21
Q

Which type of blade is very creep resistant (but not extremely creep resistant)?

A

Directional solidified structure blades

22
Q

What is the advantage of a directional solidified structure over an equiaxed crystal mixture blade?

A

The blades have longer, slender crystals aligned in columns, which means they have fewer grain boundaries and are very creep-resistant.

23
Q

What is the advantage of using a single crystal blade?

A

No boundaries, eliminating corrosion and extremely creep resistant blade.

24
Q

What is creep?

A

A function of centrifugal force, material temperature and time. The blade stretches beyond its ability to reform its original length.

25
Q

When would you find primary creep?

A

During engines first run

26
Q

When would you find tertiary creep?

A

During operating overloads

27
Q

What is a turbine’s service life calculated using?

A

Secondary creep. A strain/time graph over the life of the turbine.

28
Q

What are nozzle guide vanes made from?

A

Nickel alloys

29
Q

What does anodising a blade do?

A

It’s an electrolytic process which increases corrosion resistance and wear resistance on the turbine blades

30
Q

What is the advantages of using turbine cooling?

A
Increases service life
Increases efficiency (active clearance control)
31
Q

What are the 3 types of turbine cooling methods?

A

Convection cooling
Impingement cooling
Film cooling

32
Q

What is the most effective method of cooling turbines?

A

Film cooling
Maximum cooling effect with minimum cooling air.

Disadvantage, is precision made; therefore costly.

33
Q

Where is it only necessary to cool in a turbine?

A

Nozzle guide vanes and HPT

34
Q

What are the purpose of the nozzle guide vanes?

A

Gas flow is accelerated but static pressure decreases

35
Q

What is 1 turbine stage classed as?

A

NGV and rotor

36
Q

What is turbine creep caused by?

A

High RPM and high temperatures

37
Q

Why are nozzle guide vanes fitted?

A

They increase the velocity of the gas

38
Q

What are blue and golden deposits evidence of on a turbine blade?

A

Titanium

39
Q

Which parts of an Impulse-Reaction blade are tip/root?

A

Tip - Reaction

Root - Impulse
