2
Q

What does the start master switch control?

A

Prepares electrical system - placing all AC power to the starter (if electric)
Ensures engine gauging systems are powered for the start in all conditions

Q

What is the purpose of a starter jaw?

A

It engages the starter motor axially with the gearbox and once started, moves back disengaging with the gearbox.

Q

What is a sprag clutch?

A

Another way of engaging the starter to the gearbox. The ratchet pawls/sprags rotate with the engine and engage with lower centrifugal forces, ensuring the engine starter is connected below idling speed

Q

What is the main advantage of using a starter generator?

A

One unit required to perform starter and generator functions, saving weight and less spare parts required

Q

What is the trembler mechanism?

A

A switch which vibrates in a DC ignition system; creating a spark and storing it in the primary capacitor until there is enough charge to jump the discharge gap

Q

Where would you find a DC ignition system?

A

On a jet, where there is no APU and battery input voltage isn’t hugely there for starting

13
Q

Why is a ceramic semiconductor igniter plug the one used today?

A

Resistance of the semiconductor increases as it heats up. The air gap between electrodes becomes ionised and the resistance is lower than the semiconductor; which causes a high energy spark as it discharges across the air gap

16
Q

What is the HEIU choke for?

A

Prolonging the discharge

17
Q

Where are the high voltage pulses formed in a DC capacitor ignition system?

A

At the triggering transformer

18
Q

What type of turbine blade is used in an air starter motor?

A

Impulse turbine

19
Q

What is the purpose of a resistor in a D.C starter motor?

A

It prevents current surge when the motor is at low RPM

20
Q

What is the purpose of the evacuated tube containing the discharge gap in a DC HEIU?

A

It is not affected by outside conditions, therefore keeping a constant igniter spark

21
Q

What is the purpose of the “Choke” in a DC ignition system?

A

It prologues the discharge spark

22
Q

HEIU require an energy amount of ___ joules.

A

HEIU require an energy amount of 12 joules.

23
Q

How does a glow plug operate?

A

Electrically - heats up

24
Q

When disconnecting a HEIU which plug do you disconnect first; HT or LT?

A

LT isolated and disconnected first.
