15.5 Polarisation Flashcards
Which type of waves can be polarised?
transverse only
Why cannot longitudinal waves be polarised?
They only travel in one plane already, so will just pass straight through or be blocked
What is a plane polarised wave(just a polarised wave)
A wave in which medium (particles) are oscillating in one plane
What can we use to create a plane polarised wave ? for light
polarising filters
What is a perfect example which shows a longitudinal wave cannot be polarised?
sound will pass through any slit
What is the name of the plane that lets the wave through?
plane of polarisation
What would happen if two filters are held together in front of a transverse wave source and originally the wave passes through both in one plane, but the second plane is now rotated.
we will see a reduction in intenisty until it reaches zero where the planes of polarisation are perpendicular to each other from the two filters.
