15.3 Flashcards
What is the second step of cloning?
The egg cell is fused with a donor cell that contains a. nucleus taken from an adult. The resulting diploid egg develops into an embryo which is then implanted into a foster mother where it develops until birth
What do genetically modified plants and animals lead to?
Better less expensive and more nutritious food as well as less harmful manufacturing processes. Includes resistance to herbicides
What are GM crops?
Genetically modified plants, uses genes that produce a protein known as BT toxin. It is harmless to humans and most animals, but enzymes in the digestive systems of insects convert BT to a form that kills them.plants with BT genes do not have to be sprayed with pesticides. They produce higher yields of crops
What is gene therapy?
The process of changing a gene to treat a medical disease of disorder.
First step of gene therapy
Identify the faulty gene
Second step of gene therapy
Use restriction enzymes to cut out all the normal gene from DNA.
Third step of gene therapy
Splice the normal gene into viral DNA
Fourth step of gene therapy
Allow recombinant viruses to infect human cells
What is DNA fingerprinting?
Used to identify individuals by analyzing sections of DNA
Steps in DNA fingerprinting
First, restriction enzymes cut a small sample of human DNA into fragments.
Then a DNA prone (dye) detects the fragments that have highly variable regions, revealing a series of variously sized DNA bands.
DNA samples can be obtained from blood, sperm or tissue. Even a hair strand if it has tissue at the root
What is the first step of cloning?
The nucleus of an un fertilized egg cell is removed
