14.1 Flashcards
What is a genome?
The full set of genetic information that an organism carries in it’s DNA
What are sex chromosomes?
They determine the sex of an individual.
xx for females
xy for males
Males and females born in 50:50 ration
What are autosomes?
Autosomal chromosomes or the 44 remaining human chromosomes.
How many chromosomes does human genome consist of?
46.
44 autosomes and 2 sex
What is sex linked inheritance?
Genes located on the X and Y chromosomes that show a pattern of inheritance.
Located on sex chromosomes
Recessive phenotype of sex linked genetic disorder tends to be more common among males.
What is a pedigree?
A chart which shows the relationships with a family.
What can pedigrees do?
Show the presence or absence of a trait. Makes it possible to determine the nature of genes and alleles associated with inherited human traits. You can determine if a trait is dominant or recessive, autosomal or sex linked.
What is a karyotype?
A micrograph of the complete diploid set of chromosomes grouped together in pairs arranged in decreasing size order.
