11.2 Flashcards
What is probability?
The likelihood that a particular event will occur
If each F1 plant had one tall allele and one short allele (Tt), what is the ratio of gametes produced would carry the short allele?
1/2
What ratio showed up constantly in mendels experiments?
3 dominant : 1 recessive
What is homozygous?
Organisms that have 2 identical alleles for a particular gene (TT) or (tt)
What is heterozygous?
Organisms that have two different alleles for the same gene. (Tt)
What is genotype?
Genetic makeup (TT Tt tt). Is inherited.
What is phenotype?
Physical traits (tall or short). Formed as a result of environment and genotype.
What is the principle of independent assortment?
States that genes for different traits can separate independently during formation of gametes.
What do Punnett squares do?
Use mathematical probability to help determine the genotype and phenotype combinations in genetic crosses
