15.05 Flashcards
What is the function of the combustion chamber?
Produce hot stream of air or gas for the turbine or jet nozzle
What are the two main components of the combustion chamber?
Casing and flame tube
What happens in the combustion chamber?
Fuel vaporises and mixes with airflow then ignited by a igniter plug
What are the two conditions required for combustion?
Ratio of air to fuel, air velocity must be slow enough so combustion happens in the chamber
What is the airflow split into?
Primary and secondary
What is the primary airflow used for?
Used for combustion and around 20/30%
What happens in the primary airflow in the combustion chamber?
The air velocity is stabilised
What temperature does the flame reach?
2000 degrees Celsius
What is the secondary airflow used for?
Cooling
What are the 3 types of combustion chamber?
Can type, can annular, annular
Where will can type combustion chamber found?
Old gas turbine with centrifugal compressor
What is the advantage and disadvantage on can angular combustion chambers?
Simple and good strength, heavy and need lots of space
What are advantages and disadvantages of can angular combustion chambers?
Smaller and lighter, large aerodynamic loss
What are advantages and disadvantages of annular combustion chambers?
Smaller and lighter with same airflow, expensive and hard to remove
What is the function of the combustion case?
Houses the flame tube and carries loads
