15. longitudinal designs Flashcards
longitudinal studies/research
following the same group of individuals over an extended period of time
collecting data from them at various intervals to see changes over time
data collection method for longitudinal designs?
psychometric tests
interviews
questionnaires
tasks, etc
researchers will need to recontact ppt at different time intervals to re-test them
testing methods need to be standardised
cohort effects
the group of ppt being studied may not be the same or similar groups growing up in other time periods
longitudinal studies pros and cons
PROS:
- study developed of the same individual over time
- removes ppt variables (acts as their own baseline)
- ppt trusts researchers more, tells them more
CONS:
- attrition (people drop out)
- creates gap in data
- society changes over time
- lowers temporal validity, which
lowers confidence in
generalizability of results
- research is time consuming for researcher and ppt
