15 Anaest Death Flashcards
Morphological findings
May be minimal or absent so expert advice and complete clinical information crucial for determining the cause of death
Challenges in autopsy
Post op autopsies difficult dt surgical interventions, exudate, sepsis, adhesions, haemorrhage, edema, anatomical distortions. Proper documentation of surgical procedures is essential for accurate autopsy
Importance of preserving devices and imaging
Surgical and anaesthesia devices should not be removed before autopsy to check their placement and functionality. Pre autopsy recommended to verify the position of devices like ET tube
Causes of anaest deaths
Dt factors other than anaes agent itself such as u/l disease or procedural complications. Hypoxia, inadequate ventilation, overdose anaesthetic agents
Complications of regional anaesthesia
Cx usually minor but serious illness like cardiac arrest can occur dt intravascular injection of local anaes or errors during procedures like liposuction
Preservation of ante mortem samples
Hospital should retain ante mortem blood or body fluid samples for analytical checks in case suspect transfusion mishaps, metabolic abnormalities, toxicology analysis
