categorises human needs into 5 levels often represented as a pyramid
what is the top tier of the pyramid (1st)
SELF ACTUALISATION - individuals start to realise their full potential and personal growth
what is the 2nd tier of the pyramid
SELF ESTEEM - desire recognition, respect and sense of achievement
what is the 3rd tier of the pyramid
SOCIAL AND BELONGING - emotional relationships such as friendships and family connections
whats the 4th tier of the pyramid
SAFETY AND SECURITY - includes health, employment and financial stability
whats the bottom tier of the pyramid (5th)
PHYCOLOGICAL NEEDS - food, water, shelter etc
advantages of the theory
holistic approach, it addresses the full spectrum of employee needs
more individualised approach
recognises workers aren’t just financially motivated
can cause better working relationships within the workplace
disadvantages of the theory
can be difficult to identify where employees fit into the hierarchy
underestimates desire for staff to seek financial rewards
do all employees have the same set of needs ?
