14.4 Diabetes and its control Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 ways in which a diabetic sufferer could suffer? What does this mean?
A
- Pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin
- Body doesn’t respond effectively to insulin produced
This means BGCs are high
2
Q
What is hyperglycaemia?
A
Raised blood sugar
3
Q
What is the problem in type 1 diabetics?
A
• Patients don’t produce insulin - Beta cells on Islets of Langerhans don’t produce insulin
4
Q
What is the suspected cause of Type 1 diabetes?
A
Occurs as an autoimmune response bc person’s immune system attacks beta cells
5
Q
What is the problem with type 2 diabetics? Why is this?
A
Theyr’e fat as fuck.
- Patients can’t effectively use insulin to control BGC
- This is bc glycoprotein insulin receptors on cell membranes don’t work properly - cells lose responsiveness to insulin, so don’t absorb enough glucose from the bloodstream
6
Q
What is type 2 diabetes a result of?
A
Obesity, physical inactivity and excessive consumption of refine carbohydrates
