13.1 Coordination Flashcards
Give examples of 4 things that cause change in an organism’s internal environment.
- Blood glucose concentration
- Internal temperature
- Water potential
- Cell pH
Give examples of 4 things that cause change in an organism’s external environment.
- Humidity
- External temperature
- Light intensity
- New or sudden sound
How do animals respond to changes in their environments?
- Chemical responses, via hormones
* Electrical responses, via neurones
How do plants respond to changes in their environment?
Chemical responses, including hormones
Why is coordination needed?
Cells in organisms have become specialised as they’ve evolved, so they need to be coordinated to operate effectively
Define homeostasis
Maintenance of a stable equilibrium in the internal environment of an organism
How does cell signalling occur?
Occurs through one cell releasing a chemical which has an effect on another cell, known as a target cell
