  • Keddie [1973]
    cultural deprivation is a myth - it is just a victim-blaming explanation that ignores w/c failures being down to education being dominated by the m/c
  • Blackstone & Mortimore [1994]
    reject the idea that w/c parents don’t take an interest in their children’s education, and say that work hours prevent them form engaging in events like parents’ evening

what are other external factors that affect education

A
  • poor housing
    overcrowding
    can cause children to become ill frequently
  • diet and health
    Howard [2001] - Young people form lower-income households have a lower intake of vitamins/ minerals/energy, affecting education
  • financial support and cost of education
    Tanner et al [2003] - found that costs of books, transport, uniforn etc put a heavy burden on poor families.
    Hand me downs cheaper items can result in children being bullied/isolated by peers.

A
  • is the knowledge, skills, values and abilities, and tastes of the m/c.
  • m/c culture is an advantage in school because their abilities and interests are highly valued.
  • w/c culture is seen as rough/inferior by schools which devalues pupils from this background.
