14 - Organic chemistry (Alkanes and alkenes) Flashcards
Name the products of complete combustion of an alkane.
Carbon dioxide and water.
Name the products of incomplete combustion of an alkane.
Carbon monoxide and water.
or
Carbon and water.
What is alkane halogenation?
A halogen replacing a hydrogen atom in the presence of UV, forming a haloalkane.
Describe the process of cracking.
Thermal decomposition reaction.
Cracking of alkane forms an alkene + hydrogen (in some cases)
State the products of the cracking of ethane.
Ethene + hydrogen
State the properties of saturated hydrocarbons.
No double bonds.
Do not react with aqueous halogens. (no change in color)
State the properties of unsaturated hydrocarbons.
Double bonds
Reacts with aqueous halogens. (color change to colorless)
