14. Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is fractional distillation
Use to separate the hydrocarbon using the difference in their boiling point
separate petroleum into useful fraction
Use of refinery gas
bottled gas for heating and cooking
Use of gasoline
fuel (petrol) in car
Use of naphtha
making chemicals
Use of kerosene / paraffin
jetfuel
use of diesel oil/gas oil
use of fuel oil
use of lubricant
use of bitumen
fuel in diesel engine
fuel for ships and home heating system
lubricants, waxes and polishes
making road
what is homologous series
family of similar compounds with similar properties due to the presence of the same functional group
What is functional group
an atom or group of atoms that gives a compound particular properties
general characteristic of homologous series
each have a general formula which applies to all members of the homologous series
the number of C atoms increase by 1, the number of h increase by 2
the physical properties in a homologous series change in a regular way as the number of carbon atoms increases
what is hydrocarbon
a compound which contains only carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is alkyl group
when we remove a H atom from an alkane chaine we have a group called an alkyl group
Formula CnH(2n+1)
What is isomers
The carbon chain in alkanes and other organic compounds can be branched
Isomer is the compound with the same molecular formula but with a different structural formula
Have the same chemical properties but have different physical properties
